Abstract

The demand for animal protein, particularly from broiler chicken meat, continues to increase, requiring efforts to optimize broiler productivity. One of the efforts commonly applied is the addition of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) to feed. However, the use of AGP has been increasingly abandoned due to concerns regarding residue accumulation and the potential for antimicrobial resistance. As an alternative, natural feed additives such as probiotics and acidifiers are used to improve digestive health and enhance nutrient absorption efficiency. This study aimed to determine the effect of adding probiotics and acidifiers derived from orange juice waste (Citrus sinensis) powder to the feed on live weight, carcass weight, and carcass percentage of broiler chickens. The research was conducted from January to February at the Poultry Experimental Farm, Sriwijaya University, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 4 replications, each consisting of 5 chickens. The treatments included: P0 = control (without feed additive), P1 and P2 = tetracycline 0.8% combined with orange waste powder at 0.8% and 1.2%, and P3 and P4 = probiotic 0.8% combined with orange waste powder at 0.8% and 1.2%, respectively. The observed variables were live weight, carcass weight, and carcass percentage. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and followed by Duncan’s multiple range test due to significant differences. The results showed that the addition of feed additives had a significant effect (P<0.05) on live weight, carcass weight, and carcass percentage of broiler chickens. The average live weight ranged from 1104.5 to 1264.2 grams per bird, and carcass weight ranged from 752.5 to 881.2 grams per bird, with the highest live weight of 1264.2 grams and the highest carcass weight of 881.2 grams observed in treatment P4. The average carcass percentage ranged from 65.9% to 69.7%, with the highest percentage observed in treatment P3 (69.7%). These results indicate that the combination of probiotics and acidifiers from orange juice waste powder at both 0.8% and 1.2% effectively improved live weight, carcass weight, and carcass percentage of broiler chickens significantly. Keywords: acidifier, broiler chicken, citrus peel powder, feed additive, probiotic.
