Abstract

This research discusses the solution of the time-independent Schrödinger Equation for the case of a 1-dimensional potential step using a computational approach based on Python programming with Jupyter Notebook. The main focus is the visualization of the wave function, as well as the reflection and transmission coefficients for three energy states: E < V_0, E= V_0, and E > V_0. The critical case of E= V_0 is highlighted due to its rare discussion in standard references. The results show that for E<V_0, tunneling occurs, with particle waves briefly penetrating the potential barrier before being reflected. For E>V_0, there is still a possibility of reflection, even though classically there should be none. And for E=V_0, it shows the nature of the non-proper wave function which implies that the entire particle beam is reflected back.
