Abstract

Providing appropriate complementary breastfeeds is an important factor in supporting optimal growth and development in children. However, many mothers still have limited knowledge and skills in preparing complementary breastfeeds made from local foods. Health education using a demonstration method using a booklet is an alternative to improve mothers' competence in providing complementary breastfeeds. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of health education using a booklet about complementary breastfeeding made from local foods on mothers' knowledge and skills. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach without control. A total of 31 respondents who met the inclusion criteria were recruited using a non-probability sampling technique with a total sampling method. The knowledge analysis using the Marginal Homogeneity test showed a significant difference with a p-value of <0.001 (a<0.05). The skills analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (p<a), indicating that the health education demonstration method using booklets significantly improved mothers' knowledge and skills regarding complementary feeding (MP-ASI) made from local foods.
