Abstract

Background: Dental caries is one of the most common dental health problems among school-aged children. Lack of knowledge and improper brushing habits are the main causes. One of the efforts to overcome this issue is through Dental Health Education using engaging and age-appropriate media. Objective: To determine the effect of Dental Health Education on increasing knowledge about dental caries among children aged 10–12 years at SD Negeri 4 Muara Kelingi. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach. A total of 52 fifth and sixth-grade students were selected based on inclusion criteria. The intervention included education using posters, PowerPoint slides, animated videos, and tooth brushing demonstrations. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: The pre-test showed that the majority of students had poor knowledge (63.5%). After the intervention, all students (100%) had good knowledge. The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value < 0.001, indicating a significant difference before and after the education. Conclusion: Dental Health Education effectively improved children's knowledge of dental caries. The use of engaging educational media greatly contributed to the success of the intervention.
