Abstract
Nursing Care for Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Undergoing Hemodialysis and the Nursing Implications of Sipping Ice Cube Therapy for Managing Hypervolemia 1Elita Meliana Sary, 2Sigit Purwanto 1 Student Of Nursing Professional Study Program at Sriwijaya University 2 Lecturer Of Nursing Profesional Study Program at Sriwijaya University Email: elitameliana05@gmail.com ABSTRACT Introduction: Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease often experience various complications, one of the most common being hypervolemia. Hemodialysis (HD) patients with CKD are subject to fluid, dietary, and pharmacological restrictions, along with activity limitations and ongoing medical treatments. Thirst and dry mouth are among the most frequently reported issues due to fluid intake limitations, both in HD and CKD patients. A non-pharmacological intervention that can help reduce thirst in CKD patients is the Sipping Ice Cube therapy. Objective: This scientific paper aims to describe the implementation of Sipping Ice Cube therapy as an intervention for the nursing problem of hypervolemia in patients with chronic kidney disease. Method: This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach involving three patients diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Result: The assessment results indicated that all three patients experienced the same nursing problem: hypervolemia. After receiving the Sipping Ice Cube therapy, their reported thirst levels decreased. Discussion: Sipping Ice Cube therapy involves sucking on ice cubes, which helps suppress the sensation of thirst and prevent fluid imbalance due to overhydration. The therapy was administered for 5 minutes using 10 ice cubes (each 10 ml). The water content and cooling sensation of the ice cubes help reduce thirst by gradually releasing water as the ice melts in the mouth. Conclusion: Sipping Ice Cube therapy can be applied for 15–20 minutes over three consecutive days to reduce thirst in CKD patients. This therapy can serve as an independent nursing intervention in hospitals and can also be easily practiced by patients at home. Keyword: Chronic Kidney Disease, Hipervolemia, Sipping Ice Cube
