Abstract
Composite is a combination of two or more different materials to obtain materials with physical properties and mechanical properties better than any of its constituent components. This research aims to analyze the effect of variations in the volume fraction of the resulting mechanical properties of Eichhornia crassipes fiber composite with formaldehyde urea. Manufacture of composite specimens was conducted using hand lay-up. the material used is formaldehyde urea, Eichhornia crassipes fiber with a length of 20 mm. soaking time for 2 hours done with NaOH 5%, Comparison of fraction fiber and formaldehyde urea used is 0% fiber -100% formaldehyde urea, 15% fiber - 85% formaldehyde urea, 30% fiber - 70% formaldehyde urea, 45% fiber - 55% formaldehyde urea and 60% fiber - 40% formaldehyde urea. Physical experiment was used with density test, SEM (Scaning Electron Microscopy) testing and impact test to observe the mechanical impact strength. From the test results, the optimum results obtained in this study occurred in the comparison of variation in volume fraction of 30% fiber - 70% formaldehyde urea, the impact value is 0,07 J/mm2, the SEM testing results can trigger the formation of cavities (voids) due to shrinkage during the cooling process was different especially in the part which easy to get cold, the value of Eichhornia crassipes fiber with formaldehyde urea is 1,1363 gr/cm3 Keywords: Composite materials, Eichhornia crassipes fiber, formaldehyde urea, impact test, SEM test, hand lay-up
