Abstract
materials with physical properties and mechanical properties better than any of its constituent components. This research includes fiber composite which aims to analyze the effect of variations in the volume fraction of the resulting mechanical properties of banana stem fiber composite with polyester matrix. Manufacture of composite specimens was conducted using hand lay-up, the material used is polyester resin, banana stem fiber with a length of 20mm, and 5% NaOH treatment with soaking time 2 hours. Comparison of fraction Fiber - Polyester used is 0% fiber -100% polyester, 15% fiber - 85% polyester, 30% fiber - 70% polyester, 45% fiber -55% polyester and 60% fiber - 40% polyester. This experiment used tensile test and impact test to observe the mechanical properties include tensile strength, tensile strain, modulus of elasticity and impact strength. From the test results, the optimum results obtained in this study occurred in the comparison of variation in volume fraction of 30% fiber - 70% polyester: tensile stress is 31,11 N/mm2', tensile strain is 8,61%, the value of the modulus of elasticity is 3,61 N/mm2, and impact energy value is 0,07038 J / mm2 Keywords : Composite materials, banana stem fiber, polyester, tensile test and impact test, hand lay-up
