Abstract

macroscopically where the material serves as reinforcement (filler) and the other as a matrix to produce new materials that are stronger than its constituent materials, one of the methods for making polymer matrix composites (PMC) is by hot press molding method. In this study, the raw material composite material used is serap tire rubber powder with a mesh size of 40 and then blended polyester resin as matrix and fly ash of with a mesh size of 80 as a reinforcement (filler) with the fraetion volume respectively of 50% serap tire rubber : 30% polyester resin: 20% fly ash of coal The temperature of the hot press molding process used is 160°C with holding time for 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes. This experiment used tensile test, impaet test and density test to observe the mechanical properties and physical properties of the composite material. From the test results, the optimum conditions obtained in this study occurred in the comparison of variation of holding time for 15 minutes is : tensile strength is 5,331 N/mm2, the impaet energy is 2,741 Joule, the impaet energy value is 0,021 J/mm2, and density value is 1,129 g/cm3, while the tensile strain the maximum occurs on the variation of holding time for 10 minutes is 9.4%.
