Abstract

The dominance of coal-based energy use in Indonesia contributes significantly to environmental impacts, so that more environmentally friendly utilization solutions are needed. One alternative developed is the manufacture of coal briquettes using cold sintering, an energy-efficient low-temperature powder compaction method. This study examines the effect of variations in the composition of sub-bituminous coal and starch on the physical characteristics (density, porosity), combustion efficiency, surface morphology, and crystal structure of the briquettes. Sub-bituminous coal was obtained from PT Bukit Asam, while starch serves as a binder. The composition variations include 90%:10%, 85%:15%, and 80%:20% (coal: starch). The molding process was carried out at a pressure of 365MPa and a temperature of 60°C for 10 minutes through a cold sintering technique. Density and porosity testing used a density meter; surface morphology was observed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) at magnifications of 1000×, 2000×, and 5000×; and crystal structure were analyzed via X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The results showed that increasing starch content resulted in increased porosity and decreased density. The composition of 90% coal + 10% starch provided optimal performance, namely the highest density, lowest porosity, and best combustion efficiency. SEM results revealed a more pronounced pore structure in the composition with a higher starch content; at 5000× magnification, the surface morphology appeared very detailed. Meanwhile, XRD results showed that the main mineral phase of sub-bituminous coal did not experience significant changes. Keywords: Coal Briquettes, Cold Sintering, Porosity, Starch Powder, Density
