Abstract
The performance of karate athletes in South Sumatra had declined. One of the key indicators of achievement was athletic performance, which was influenced by various factors, including fluid intake and body composition. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between fluid intake and body composition with the performance of karate athletes in Palembang. A cross-sectional design was employed, involving 79 athletes as respondents. Data on fluid intake were collected using a 3×24-hour food record method, body composition was measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), and athlete performance was assessed through physical condition tests. The univariate analysis showed that most athletes experienced a fluid intake deficit 65 athletes (82,3%) and had high body fat (56 athletes (70,9%), normal visceral fat 71 athletes (89,9%), high muscle mass 46 athletes (58,2%), and poor performance 43 athletes (54,4%). Bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test and Fisher’s Exact Test revealed a significant relationship between fluid intake and athlete performance (p-value = 0,041), as well as between body fat and athlete performance (p-value = 0,046). Meanwhile, no significant relationship was found between visceral fat (p-value = 1,000) or muscle mass (p-value = 0,481) and athlete performance. Based on these findings, it was recommended that athletes and coaches pay closer attention to daily fluid intake adequacy and maintain balanced body composition to support optimal athletic performance.
