Abstract
Chronic pain is a significant problem in stage III cancer patients, negatively impacting both physical and psychological quality of life. This study aims to compare Classical Music Therapy with New Age Music Therapy in reducing chronic pain intensity for stage III cancer patients. The study design used a pre-experimental approach with a pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 32 respondents at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, selected through purposive sampling and then divided into two intervention groups. The first group received Classical Music Therapy (Mozart-Passacaglia), while the second group received New Age Music Therapy (Innovative Communication Sampler). The intervention was administered for 10 minutes on three consecutive days. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Data analysis was performed using the Paired Sample T-test and Independent Sample T-test. The results showed a decrease in pain intensity in both groups. The results showed a decrease in pain intensity in both groups. In Classical Music Therapy, the average pain score decreased from 6.75 to 3.75. in New Age Music Therapy, the average score decreased from 7.00 to 4.25. A Paired T-Test showed a significant difference before and after the intervention with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). An Independent Sample T-Test showed a p-value of 0.714 (p > 0.05), indicating there was no significant difference between two therapies, both of which have been shown to be effective in reducing chronic pain in stage III cancer patients. Music Therapy reduces chronic pain through distraction techniques. Slow-tempo music can calm the sympathetic nervous system, lower heart rate, relax muscles, and stimulate the release of endorphins, shifting the patient’s attention to the music. Sound is received by the ear and processed in the brain, particularly the limbic system, which plays a role in regulating emotions and pain perception.
