Abstract

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a musculoskeletal disorder that frequently occurs due to prolonged laptop use and individual factors such as gender and Body Mass Index (BMI). Final-year students are at risk of experiencing CTS complaints due to the high intensity of laptop use during thesis writing. This study aims to determine the relationship between laptop usage duration, gender, and BMI with CTS complaints among final-year students of the Faculty of Public Health, Sriwijaya University. This research employed a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach and involved 100 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included the Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire (BCTS), BMI measurement, and laptop usage duration. The results of the Chi-square test showed a significant relationship between laptop usage duration and CTS complaints (p = 0.025). However, no significant relationship was found between gender (p = 0.242) and BMI (p = 0.576) with CTS complaints (p > 0.05). It is necessary to provide education on ergonomic principles and to regularly limit the duration of laptop use in order to prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), especially among final-year students.
