Abstract

The use of smartphones is a familiar thing for people, adult, young and children. Smartphone usage is evenly distributed in the world without any exceptions. All people are able to own a smartphone very easily. Among students, smartphones are used in almost all academic or non-academic activities. However, smartphone users often do not pay attention to the negative impact of the high intensity of smartphone use on health, especially sleep quality. This research is a quantitative study with cross sectional study design, using primary data. Data were analyzed with univariate and bivariate statistical. The research sample of 108 students aged 18-25 years were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results of the bivariate statistical analysis showed that the majority of respondents with high smartphone use had poor sleep quality (76.9%). The results of the statistical test showed that the p-value = 0.002 and the results of other analyzes showed a PR value of 1.654 (1.169-2.340), so it can be seen that there is a significant relationship between smartphone use and sleep quality in university students. Based on the results of PR value, it was concluded that students who use smartphones with high duration have a 1.654 times greater chance of having poor sleep quality compared to students who use smartphones with low duration. The results of the study are in accordance with the ABC theory used in the study that a behavior in this study is that the use of a smartphone will have an impact in the form of consequence which is poor sleep quality which if the consequence is not changed or controlled it can be antecedent to the behavior that impacts on the emergence of consequence the other. Keywords : Smartphone Usage, Sleep Quality of University Students, ABC theory Literature : 92 (1970-2019)
