Abstract

Study on the use of high volume fly ash as a partial replacement of ordinary Portland cement in the concrete production has been realized by using cubical specimens of 150 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm. The specimens were made by using a mixture of, in weight ratio, cementitious material : sand : crushed stone = 1 : 2 : 3 and water cementitious material ratio (w/cm) 0.35. The cementitious material was made by blending ordinary Portland cement and fly ash. The quantity of fly ash in the blend was 50%, 55% and 60% of the total weight of the blend. The distributions of grains of sand and crushed stone were designed by using SNI T-15-1990-03: the zone 2 for the gradation of fine aggregate and the maximum diameter of 20 mm for the gradation of coarse aggregate. At the mixing time of the concrete, it was added superplastisizer of 1.5% by weight of the cementitious material. To see the possibility utilization of high volume fly ash in the concrete production, compressive strength test was realized at age 3, 7, 28 and 90 days by using three specimens for each of the age test. As a control, it is also made the specimens using 100% of ordinary Portland cement. The results of this study show that the concrete made with high volume fly ash can develop, with the age of hydration, an interesting compressive strength compared with concrete made by using 100% of ordinary Portland cement. The use of 50%, 55% and 60% of fly ash in the concrete, as a partial replacement of ordinary Portland cement, can produce compressive strength at 90 days of hydration respectively 37,52 MPa, 32,07 MPa and 30,52 MPa. These compressive strength is equal respectively to 105%, 90% and 85% of the compressive strength of concrete made by using 100% ordinary Portland cement. This fact indicates that the fly ash, as industrial waste, can be used in large quantities in the concrete industry, so that it can reduce environmental problems both in the management of industrial waste and in the concrete production.
