Abstract

The population aged 0-14 years and above 60 years old are non productive aged residents because they do not have the potential to work. While populations aged 15 years until 59 years old are productive aged residents because they could potential to get goods or service to the needs of their life. The projection of the population dependency ratio is to estimate the magnitude of the comparison between the non-productive aged population to the productive aged population. This research uses mathematical method which includes arithmetic method, geometric method and exponential method. This research uses population data of South Sumatera by age and gender in 2005, 2010 and 2015 to be projected to 2020. The selection of the best projection method using MAPE. From the MAPE calculation results, the method used for the projection is the exponential method because it has the smallest error compared with the arithmetic method and geometry method. Based on the results of the discussion, the projected population number in 2020 using the method of exponential is 8.722.433 people and the population dependency ratio is 54% which means that 100 people who are productive population bear the age of 54 people non productive population.
