Abstract
Facing up to rapid global growth, infrastructure development is needed to support a country’ˢ finances. As a developing country, Indonesia keeps to encourage infrastructure development is various sector. One of them is construction of the Palembang’ˢ LRT. In order to maximize LRT’ˢ operational an high reliability electrical system. Electric trains generally have two types of electricity supply, overhead contactnsystem and third rail. One of the potential fault in electricity system is a lightning strike. This is because the locaton of Indonesia in the tropical climate so that it has a high density of lightning strike. To resolve that kind of fault, the installation of lightning arrester is an appropriate step to reduce the impact on the LRT power supply. Many research on the simulation of lightning strikes against electrical supply of electric trains has been done, on of them tried to simulate lightning strike to electric train supply which using overhead contact system. But, there still not done yet research that simulates lightning strikes to third rail of the Palembang’ˢ LRT. This research simulates a lightning strike to the third rail when before and after the installation of LA using ATP software. The lightning were simulated strike to third rail between two tractin substation. Based on the research, the peak voltage in the traction substation when the lightning strikes occurs on the third rail, indicating an average peak voltage response of 3,384 kV. It exceeds the highest voltage standard of LRT at 1 kV. Because of the voltage oscillation is still high enough the best solution is installing LA in the traction substation and 300m from it. After the installation it obtained the peak voltage on the traction substation under 1 kV.
