Abstract

Grade Points (IP) is the value calculated based on the amount of study load taken in one semester multiplied by the weight of achievement of each course then divided by the amount of credit load taken. GPA (Grade Point Average) is the cumulative IP of the entire semester that students have followed. In the 2012 curriculum, Department of Mathematics Faculty of MIPA Unsri has 5 Interest Sector Groups (KBM), namely: Pure Mathematics, Optimization, Statistics, Actuarial, and Computation. In addition there are also compulsory subjects are divided into Group of General Subject (MKU), Group of Basic Subject (MKD), Group of Mathematics Sciences Subject (MKM), and Group of Elective Subject (MKP). The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of students based on the group of subjects by using K-Means cluster analysis on the enrollment year 2012. Based on K-Means cluster analysis obtained 3 clusters of students. Cluster 1 consists of 10 students. They have high GPA and dominant take KBM of Optimization. Cluster 2 with 30 students is a group of students with moderate GPA and dominant to take KBM of Statistics and Actuarial. Furthermore, cluster 3 consists of 17 students and they have low GPA with KBM which is dominantly taken is Pure KBM. Based on the correlation among high GPA variables can be represented by IP of Group of Mathematics Sciences Subject (MKM) is also high.
