Abstract

Breastfeeding is essential for optimal baby growth for both physical and mental well-being and intelligence. The success of exclusive breastfeeding can be influenced by maternal, infant and family factors. Maternal characteristics of age, occupation, education, family income, parity and birth distance may influence the success of breastfeeding. This study was conducted to find out association between breastfeeding characteristics and breastfeeding confidence in breastfeeding ASI in the Work Area of 23 Ilir Puskesmas Palembang.. The design used in this study is descriptive analytical with cross sectional approach. Sampling using pusrposive sampling with a sample size of 70 breastfeeding respondents. Data analysis included univariates and bivariates using Chi Square with univariate analysis results showing that most respondents were young adults (85.7%) with higher education (88.6%), respondents were mostly unemployed (87.1%), family income was mostly in the low category (84.3%), while maternal parity was more than half (61.4%), and birth rate was more than half in the ≥1 year category (61.4%). While bivariate analysis shows that there is a significant relationship between breastfeeding characteristics and breastfeeding confidence. Data analysis with Fisher's Exact Test showed that the significance value of each variable (sig <0.05). At age (p=0,000), education (p=0.018), employment (p=0.003), income (p=0.003), parity (p=0.041), and birth distance (p=0.041). It is hoped that in achieving successful breastfeeding coverage the mother can be more confident in providing breastfeeding especially exclusive breastfeeding, which can be applied in breastfeeding and improving the health of the mother and baby.
