Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of chitosan in the ration to the external quality of silver Arabic chicken eggs. This research was conducted for 7 weeks from August to September 2019 in the Laboratory of Animal Husbandry Experimental Study Program and the Animal Nutrition and Food Laboratory, Department of Animal Husbandry Technology and Industry, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. Livestock used of this research were 60 silver Arabian chickens aged 4,5 months, The ration used of this research was a basal ration that consisted of bran, corn and concentrate with the addition of chitosan, This research used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 6 treatments and 5 replications. As a variable unit: R0 (Control), R1 (Basal Ration containing 0.5% chitosan), R2 (Basal Ration containing 1% chitosan), R3 (Basal Ration containing 1.5% chitosan), R4 (Basal Ration containing 2% chitosan), R5 (Basal ration containing 2.5% chitosan). The observed variables were egg weight, egg index, shell thickness, and shell weight. The data analyzed using variance (ANOVA) if it showed a real difference it would be followed by Duncan’s test. Based on the results of the reseach showed that the addition of chitosan in ration has a significant effect (P <0.05) to the thickness of the shell but on egg weight, egg index and shell weight had no significant effect (P> 0.05). The conclusion of this reseacsh is the addition of 1,5% chitosan can increased the thickness of the shell and has not effect egg weight, egg index and shell weight.
