Abstract
This study aims to determine the characteristics of cuttlefish bone powder as a heterogeneous base catalyst from palm oil waste and to know the quality of biodiesel produced. The study was conducted from June 2017 to October 2017. This study used laboratory experimental method and the data obtained were analyzed by using different test (Independent Sample t-Test) through SPSS 16.0 for Windows program. This test is performed on the cetane number, density, and viscosity of the resulting biodiesel. Biodiesel preparation with 1 treatment, and 2 replications of biodiesel testing of CaO heterogeneous catalyst, and commercial catalyst (lime tohor) as comparison. The result of CaO heterogeneous base catalyst study on XRD characterization (X-ray diffraction) showed that the sharp shape was crystal. Characterization of SEM-EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy) of cuttlefish bone catalysts indicates that the catalyst is shaped like a clot and a lime tohor catalyst shows that the catalyst is shaped like a slab. The EDS (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) of cuttlefish bone CaO heterogeneous base catalyst contain CaO 93% -b and lime tohor contain CaO 94% -b. The results of gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) in the biodiesel composition showed that the resulting biodiesel contains methyl esters corresponding to the fatty acids contained in used cooking oil. The characteristics of biodiesel quality by using cuttlefish bone catalyst meet the quality requirements of biodiesel in accordance with SNI 7182-2015. Characteristics of biodiesel quality by using lime catalyst meet the requirements of biodiesel quality in accordance with SNI 7182-2015 unless the viscosity value of biodiesel.
