Abstract
This thesis is the result of research on leakage currents in an insulator made from clay (clay) obtained from excavation around Payakabung village, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. Tests were carried out on 2 types of samples, namely samples with welding or coating using Kaolin Clay and samples without graders. Measurement of the leakage current is carried out on a sample isolator made in the form of a cylinder with a diameter of 50 mm and a thickness of 5 mm which is placed between two copper electrodes (cooper tape) using a sensor in the form of a current transformer (pearson current monitor) connected to the picoscope, and a personal computer as a reader. The current flowing from the upper side of the insulator which is given voltage to the lower electrode which is connected to ground, is read by the sensor as an indicator of failure of the insulator function. The results of the test showed that the insulator coated with kaolin clay had a better strength compared to the insulator that was not coated. This is indicated by the value of the voltage when the current starts flowing in the insulator that is not given a kaolin clay coating, namely 88 volts, while those given a kaolin clay coating is 146 volts. The leakage current in the insulator which was not given a kaolin clay layer was about 40.7293 µA, greater than that of the insulator with a kaolin clay layer, which was 40.2903 µA.
