Abstract

The research had been carried out on the extraction of silica from bagasse and its application to adsorb the congo red dye. Silica extraction was carried out by calcination method at temperature variations of 700, 800 and 900oC and then characterized using XRD and SEM-EDS. The variables of silica adsorption on the congo red dye included the contact time and the optimum concentration of the congo red dye. This study uses the best calcined silica at a temperature of 700oC because according to the results of XRD characterization it has met the JCPDS data with an angle of 2θ amounting to 21.62o, with a crystal size 2,36 x 10-3 and amorphous in nature. SEM-EDS analysis results show that the highest silica content at 700oC is 17.46%. Furthermore, to determine the adsorption measurement of the congo red dye seen from the concentration using the UV-VIS spectrophotometer method. Before the application is carried out to adsorb the congo red dye, the pHpzc is determined first, and the results obtained are the pHpzc which is suitable for silica to adsorb the congo red dye at pHpzc 8.1. Furthermore, the 700oC calcined silica was applied to adsorb the congo red dye with adsorption variables including 45 minutes of contact time with the adsorption of silica at 9.6725 mg/g and the optimum concentration of congo red dye at 135 ppm with the adsorption of silica at 44.681 mg/g. The silica adsorption isotherm follows the Langmuir isotherm with an R2 value of 0.957.
