Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of the Relay Writing method on the ability to write descriptive texts in class VII students of SMP Negeri 13 Palembang. This study uses quasi-experimental methods. The research sample consisted of two classes, namely class VII.3 as an experimental class totaling 30 students who were treated using the Relay Writing method and VII.4 as a control class totaling 30 students using conventional methods commonly used by teachers in schools. The number of students from the two samples was 60 people. Data collection techniques using test techniques and data processing using t-test calculations with the SPSS 25 program. The results showed there were differences in test results between the experimental class and the control class. In the initial test the experimental class got an average value of 58.47 and a control class of 55.80. While the average value of the final test experimental class 76.47 and 64.77 control class. From the results of t-test calculations prove that tcount> ttable = 11.586> 1.999 with df = 62 at 95% success rate (α = 0.025). This shows that the ability to write descriptive text for grade VII students of SMP Negeri 13 Palembang in the experimental class has a significant effect. Therefore, the Relay Writing method affects the ability to write descriptive text for grade VII students of SMP Negeri 13 Palembang. It is recommended that Indonesian teachers use the Relay Writing method in learning to write descriptive text in school. The learning method Relay Writing can be applied in learning and can help students be more active. In addition, students can develop ideas to describe things in real situations.
