Abstract

Background: Tuberculous meningitis is a form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis with inflammatory characteristics of the meninges due to invasion Mycobacterium tuberculosis with the highest mortality rate compared to other extrapulmonary tuberculosis and can cause severe manifestations and neurological disorders. Indonesia is a country with the third highest tuberculosis cases in the world and it is estimated that around 10.4 million new tuberculosis cases happen each year, and around 100,000 of them develop tuberculosis meningitis. Currently, there is no official reference data that reports the incidence of tuberculous meningitis in Indonesia, meanwhile, this is important in order to establish adequate diagnosis and treatment with rapid and precise accuracy. Methods: This study was a cross sectional descriptive study from medical record data. Results: From 40 subjects, the majority of cases of tuberculous meningitis were in the age range of 26-35 years (40%). The majority of tuberculous meningitis patients were male (72.5%), the majority of patients had normal nutritional status (57.5%), had no history of pulmonary tuberculosis (32.5%), and were not HIV sufferers (65%) . Some of the patients had diabetes (27.5%). Based on BMRC (British Medical Research Council) staging, some of the patients were in BMRC stage 2 (40%). On examination of the cerebrospinal fluid, cell median (66 cell/µl), protein (164.60 mg/dL), glucose ratio (0.27) and lymphocytes (83). Most of patients had neurological manifestations of decreased consciousness (97.5%), while some common complications were hydrocephalus (35%). The majority of the patients' outcome were death (65%).
