Abstract

Smoking is one of the risk factors of the incident hypertension and myocardial infarction. Hypertension and myocardial infarction due to smoking is a chronic disease that can reduce the numbers of human life expectancy and affects the quality of life. Smoking has become a lifestyle for people in developing countries. Indonesia is in the 5th position with the highest number of smokers in the world. Hypertension is a hemodynamic imbalance of the cardiovascular system that takes the lives of nearly 8 million people each year. Previous studies have shown that the relationship between knowledge of the people who smoke and the incidence of hypertension is still very low. The research is aimed to know the relationship between knowledge level of hypertension and smoking behavior in the Palembang motor cycle community. The study was an analytic observational study with a cross sectional design. Data were obtained from 92 respondents who are male aged productive who are the members of motor cycle community in Palembang. Statictical analysis was done using Chi-square and Somers. The results of this study were mostly aged 17-25 years (77.2%), student occupation (52%), last high school education (55.4%) and did not have a family history of hypertension (56%).The results of the analysis using the Chi-square test and somers test showed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge level of hypertension and smoking behavior (p = 0.001). In this analysis has shown that there was significant association between knowledge level of hypertension and smoking duration (p = 0.03) and then there are no significant association between knowledge level of hypertension and number of cigarettes a day. The prevalence of smoking among 92 respondents of motor cycle community in Palembang was 67.4%. There was a significant relationship between knowledge level of hypertension and smoking behaviour and there are was significant relationship between knowledge level of hypertension and smoking duration and then there are no significant association between knowledge level of hypertension and number of cigarettes a day.
