Abstract

This research is entitled "The Double Role of Clothes Merchant Women at Multiwahana Market, Sialang Village, Sako District, Palembang City". The purpose of this study is to describe the background of women’s double role who works in domestic sector. This study also describes the double role of clothes merchant women or additional income earner and as housewife along with the obstacles that they have due to their double role.This research used Max Weber's theory of action and the concept of three roles according to Moser. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative using individual analysis units. Data collection techniques were carried out by direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation using 5 main informants i.e. Women clothing dealers at Multiwahana Market. The informants were determined using purposive. The examination and the validity of the data were analyzed using triangulation. The result of this study indicates that the reason of the women for working is to help their husband in supporting the family’s finances while the divorcee works as the backbone of the family. Clothes merchant women also carry out all the double roles which consists of: productive roles, reproductive roles and social roles. Of all the double roles carried out there are internal obstacles in the form of health problems, feeling guiltyof leaving children and the domestic work becomes neglected. While the external obstacles are the views of other people on the double role that they carry out. Keywords: Double Role, Clothes Merchant Women
