Abstract
The problem of overweight round the world continues to increase rapidly. The prevalence of overweight in indonesia in the adolescent age group was 19.1 % 26.3% and 35.4% in 2007, 2013 and 2018 respectively. Overweight can cause diseases such as cardiovascular (especially heart diseas and stroke), diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders and cancer. The influense of peers (peer group) is needed to increase student’s motivation to lose weight to prevent the diseases. This study aims to find out the efectiveness of peer group on weight loss of students who are overweight via whatsapp. This is a quantitative study with pre-experimental research design with one group pre-test post-test design with control group. The rwspondents were 24 students of sriwijaya university who studied in indralaya campus. The results of study showed that the p-value obtained in the intervention group was 0.000 (p-value <0.005) meaning that there was a significant diffrence between the student’s weight before and after the peer group intervetion via whatsapp. The data im this study were analyzed using paired t-test wiht the results of the study having a significant level of> 00.5 (p-value=0,770) meaning that there was no significant diffrence of the student;s weight between the intervention group and the control group. The factor influencing weight change was the motivation of each respondent and one of yhe factors influencing the results between the intervention group and the control group were not significant was the limited length of time, only 14 days.
