Abstract

The abundant maize stover in the harvest season needs to be utilized with processing and preservation technology as the availability of forage need. Silage is one of the feed or forage preservation techniques at a certain given water content through microbial fermentation process by lactic acid bacteria called ensilase and takes place in a place called silo. The purpose of this study was to examine the palatability of maize stover silage with or without addition of rice bran and its effect on feeding behavior in bali Cattle. This research was conducted in May until June 2017 in Field Laboratory of Animal Husbandry Study Program of Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. This research consisted of 2 treatments (P0: maize stover silage / control and P1: maize stover silage with addition of rice bran) with 2 repetitions. The variables observed in this research included the palatability of both feed types and feeding behavior consisting of sniffing frequency, lapping frequency and chewing frequency. Statistical analysis used was independent T-student test. The results showed that the palatability and feeding behavior of both types of feed showed no effect (P>0.05). However, it was known that the addition of rice bran did not negatively affect its palatability on maize stover silage. Keywords : Bali Cattle, Feedeng Behavior, Palatability, Rice Bran, Silage Maize Stover Jerami jagung yang melimpah dimusim panen perlu dimanfaatkan dengan teknologi pengolahan dan pengawetan sebagai ketersediaan hijauan pakan ternak. Silase adalah salah satu teknik pengawetan pakan atau hijauan pada kadar air tertentu melalui proses fermentasi mikrobial oleh bakteri asam laktat yang disebut ensilase dan berlangsung di dalam tempat yang disebut silo. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji palatabilitas silase jerami jagung dengan penambahan dedak padi dan pengaruhnya terhadap perilaku konsumsi pada Sapi Bali. Penelitian ini telah dilaksanakan pada bulan Mei sampai bulan Juni 2017 di Laboratorium Lapangan Program Studi Peternakan Fakultas Pertanian Universitas Sriwijaya. Penelitian ini terdiri dari 2 perlakuan (P0 : silase jerami jagung atau kontrol dan P1: silase jerami jagung dengan penambahan dedak padi) dengan 2 kali ulangan. Peubah yang diamati dalam penelitian ini meliputi palatabilitas terhadap kedua jenis pakan yang diberikan dan perilaku konsumsi yang terdiri dari frekuensi mengendus, frekuensi menjilat dan frekuensi mengunyah. Analisa statistik yang digunakan adalah uji independent T – student. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan palatabilitas dan perilaku konsumsi terhadap kedua jenis pakan menunjukkan hasil tidak berpengaruh(P>0,05). Namun diketahui penambahan dedak padi tidak memberikan pengaruh negatif terhadap palatabilitasnya pada silase jerami jagung.
