Abstract

This thesis is entitled "Parental Social Control in Smartphone Use in Early Childhood in Tegal Rejo Village Rt 03 Lawang Kidul District, Muara Enim Regency". The use of smartphones is currently widely found from various groups ranging from the elderly to the young. The use of smartphones among early childhood is very important for parents to control their children. The purpose of this study is to find out and understand the ways of parental social control in the use of smartphones in early childhood. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative method. The research findings were obtained from primary data in the form of observations, interviews, and documentation, then the data were analyzed using the social control theory proposed by Paul B. Horton and Chester L. Hunt. The results of this study indicate that the way of social control carried out by parents against smartphone users in early childhood in Tegal Rejo Village Rt 03 is a persuasive way that is carried out without violence in the form of reprimands, advice, and persuasion and a coercive way that is done with violence by giving punishment. Furthermore, the results of the study also showthat there are obstacles in parents exercising social control over their children. These obstacles come from busy parents with work, the feeling of pity that arises for children, as well as obstacles that come from the surrounding environment.
