Abstract
Background: Ulcerated lesions are the most common oral mucosal lesions. The pain in oral ulcerated lesions usually interferes with daily activities, so medication is needed to reduce the pain. Mucobioadhesive has been reported to be used as a treatment for ulcerated stomatitis lesions. Gambir is one of the most common herbs in traditional medicine and has been known to be effective in reducing the intensity of pain. The use of gambir in the form of mucobioadhesive has never been done before in Indonesia, so it is necessary to do the research about this matter. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mucobioadhesive containing of gambir extract (Uncaria gambir) in the management of pain in oral ulcerative lesions. Methods: The study was administered in the Department of Oral and Dentistry using a pretest-posttest with control group design with 30 subjects divided into 2 groups, namely the mucobioadhesive containing of gambir extract group and the placebo mucobioadhesive control group. Subjects were instructed to apply mucobioadhesive 3 times a day for 7 days. The pain of the ulcerated lesion was measured using a visual analog scale (VAS) on day 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7. Results: On day 5 and 7, the pain score of mucobioadhesive containing gambir extract group was significantly lower than the placebo mucobioadhesive control group, which indicated that the mucobioadhesive containing gambir extract can reduce pain better when compared to the placebo mucobioadhesive. Conclusion: mucobioadhesive containing of gambir extract can reduce the pain of oral ulcerative lesions. Keywords: gambir extract, mucobioadhesive, pain, oral ulcerative lesions
