Abstract
Conversion of glucose and fructose into levulinic acid has been carried out using natural zeolite and bentonite as catalysts. Natural zeolite and bentonite were characterized using X-Ray Diffractometer and FT-IR spectrophotometer before catalytic process. Reaction of glucose and fructose in water medium at 80°C using natural zeolite and bentonit until 10 hours did not produce levulinic acid. The extended reaction time until 30 hours produce hydroxymethyl fiirfural as byproduct. Optimation reaction through variation of temperature also did not produce levulinic acid as main product.
