Abstract

Indonesia has various types of transportation that can be used to assist various purposes in utilizing the potential of the waters, especially in the agricultural sector. However, the water transportation which applies environmental friendly concept is still rare. Rafts that use solar energy as propulsion, need to know the amount of load that can be accepted before the raft is used. This study aims to test the performance of a raft made of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipe against a given load. This research was carried out at Laboratory of Machinery and Equipment and Laboratory of Soil Department Field, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sriwijaya from November 2021 to April 2022. The method used in this study was a descriptive method. Several research procedures used in this study, namely the raft design and manufacture, raft operation, and raft testing. Moreover, the observed parameters in this study are cross sectional area, volume of pipe, analysis of buoyancy, design load, water flow velocity, wind speed, and raft speed. From the research that has been carried out, the results obtained are that the cross-sectional area of the raft is 56.000 cm2, the overall volume of the pipe is 0.2516 m3, the buoyancy force is 246.8196 N, the design load is 251.6 kg, the water flow velocity is 0 m/s, wind speed 0 m/s, and raft speed is 316.8 m/s. The results of the load test that have been carried out, show that the amount of load given and the layout of the load affect the height not submerged on the raft. Based on the performance test on a raft made of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipe for a given load, it can be concluded that the best performance on the raft design can be achieved when loading 100 kg at the measurement point position 1 (0-50 cm) with a height not submerged 4.5 cm for the right side (A) of the raft and 4.5 cm for the left (B) of the raft.
