Abstract

Jasus method is a way to motivate students to use English in daily conversation, in which the students spy on each other to report and punish those who do not speak English. This study aims to find out the students’ perception of the Jasus method as an English language learning discipline and the relationship between it and students’ English skills development at Sabilul Hasanah Islamic boarding school Banyuasin. This case study collected the data by distributing questionnaire sheets and conducting interviews. The data were analyzed qualitatively using descriptive statistical analysis for the questionnaires and Miles and Huberman’s Flow Model Analysis technique: data reduction, data display, and data conclusion for the interviews. From the total of 30 students, the findings of the questionnaires showed that most students (67%) liked the Jasus method to help them master the English language. Also, the results of the relationship between Jasus implementation and students’ English skills development showed an absolute positive (100%) relationship. Moreover, the findings of the interviews showed that all interviewees agreed that the Jasus method as an English language learning discipline was important to make them get used to speaking English. However, some interviewees disagreed if the Jasus method continued to be applied in their school since they thought that the Jasus method limited them to talking freely outside the class. Therefore the Jasus method as the English language learning discipline at Sabilul Hasanah Islamic Boarding School still needs improvement to be entirely accepted.
