Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is a disorder during menstruation that most often occurs in adolescent girls since getting their first menstruation. The cause of dysmenorrhea is due to an imbalance of the hormone progesterone and increased prostaglandins caused by several factors and one of them is the content of trans fatty acids contained in fast food or fast food. The purpose of this study was to analyze whether there is a relationship between fast food consumption habits and the incidence of dysmenorrhea in female students at Sriwijaya University. This type of research used a cross sectional design. The sample of this research is 160 Sriwijaya University students who were taken by purposive sampling technique. The results of univariate analysis showed that the incidence of dysmenorrhea is 92 respondents (57.5%) and fast food consumption habits occurred in 108 respondents (67.5%). The results of bivariate analysis showed that there is a relationship between fast food consumption habits (p-value = 0.0001), family history (p-value = 0.0001), and physical activity (p-value = 0.0001) with the incidence of dysmenorrhea in Sriwijaya University student. There is no relationship between age of menarche (p-value = 0.087) and the incidence of dysmenorrhea in Sriwijaya University students. The conclusion of this study is that female students who often consume fast food, have low physical activity and have a history of dysmenorrhea in their family are have a risk of experiencing dysmenorrhea. It is recommended for female students to reduce consumption of fast food such as fried foods, bakery products containing margarine, choosing low-fat milk and reducing consumption of fatty meats.
