Abstract
Writing is a skill that must be possessed by a student, one of which is writing articles. Good article writing must have the right rules and procedures. The purpose of this study was to determine the abilities and investigate the challenges of students in writing scientific articles in English for journal publication. The investigation involved 31 students at the 7th semester of Sriwijaya University. The research approach was descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques in research are tests and questionnaires. The data analysis technique used is the Miles and Huberman model. The steps are, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The first test used consisted of 60 items to determine students' ability to write articles for journal publication. Furthermore, a questionnaire consisting of 20 items to understand the problems and students' perceptions of problems related to writing for academic publications in English. The findings of this study indicate that 56.84% of the respondents were categorized as good in students' ability to write articles for journal publication, while the remaining 43.16% still needed guidance. On the other hand, grammar is the most difficult aspect of writing articles.
