Abstract

Background: Lung cancer is the growth of malignant cells in the lungs that can spread to other organs so that the surrounding cells are damaged and decrease in function. According to the WHO classification, lung carcinoma is divided into several types, namely: Adenocarcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Large Cell Carcinoma, and Small Cell Carcinoma. Pleural effusion is a clinical manifestation that can be found in 50-60% of patients with primary or metastatic lung malignancy. Pleural effusion is a condition where there is an abnormal build up of fluid in the pleural cavity. This study aims to find out the relationship between the type of lung carcinoma and pleural effusion in lung cancer patients. Method: This study is an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design. The subjek in this study is secondary data which are the medical records of lung cancer patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2020-2021 who meets the criteria for inclusion. Sampling used cumulative data until the sample data was fulfilled and then analyzed statistically using the SPSS application and the Chi-square test. Results: From 57 subjek data, The highest age range in lung carcinoma patients was 56-65 years (47.4%), mostly found in men (80.7%), most patients were nonsmokers (94.7%), the most common histopathological diagnosis was adeno carcinoma (61.4%), and 32 lung cancer patients had pleural effusion complications (56.1%). The bivariate test showed a non-significant relationship between the type of lung carcinoma and pleural effusion in lung cancer patients (p=0.123). Conclusion: There is a non-significant relationship between the types of lung carcinoma and pleural effusion in lung cancer patients. Keywords: Lung Carcinoma, Pleural Effusion, Type of Lung Carcinoma
