Abstract

This experiment aimed to investigate the characteristics profile of VFA (volatile fatty acids) and microbial populations in prebiotic of palm pressed fiber . The research was conducted at nutrition and animal feeding laboratory, agriculture faculty, Sriwijaya University in March to April 2012. This research used Completely Randomized Design with three treatments and five replicates for total VFA analysis and 2 test for analysis of microbial populations. Rice straw of substrate 1 g (P0), rice straw of substrate 1 g prebiotic fiber + 5% prebiotic of palm pressed fiber (Pl) and rice straw of substrate 1 g + 10% prebiotic palm pressed fiber. The parameters was Observed to include total VFA production, microbial populations and VFA proflles Partial. The results of this study indicated that affected the treatment of material was significantly (p> 0.05) on total VFA but not significantly (p <0.05) on microbial populations. Based on the results of the experiment the control treatment (P0) had the highest average of total VFA and VFA partial compared to other treatments, while the highest average seen in the treatment of microbial populations (Pl). Concluded that decline in total VFA production in P0 treatment compared with treatment of Pl and P2 were equal to 3.49 mmol and 2.80 mmol, but increased in cellulolytic microbial population, amilolytic, and proteolytic in the treatment of Pl respectively by 5.15 x 106 cfu, 11.25 x 14.45 x 106 cfu and 106 cfu. Lowest C2/C3 ratio of acetate to propionate treatment ofPl is equal to 3.87 mmol meant precursors C2/C3 that would stimulate the formation of body fat according to purpose of fattening than formation of milk fat.
