Abstract

The objectives of this research is to determine VFA profile characterization on beef cattle rations based on oil palm agroindustry by-product. The research carried out at the laboratory of animal feeding and nutrition, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University in January to February 2012. This research used complete randomized block design (CRD) with five was treatments and five replications. The treatments were grass field as control (R0), 100% commercial concentrate (RI), 25% Oil Sludge + 75% palm oil midrib milled + 1% supplement (R2), 50% oil sludge + 50% palm oil midrib milled + 1% supplement (R3), 75% oil sludge + 25% palm oil midrib milled + 1% supplement (R4). The observed parameter were dry matter digestibility (DMD), Organic Matter Digestibility (OMD), N-NH3 concentration, Total VFA production and VFA Partial Kinetics. The results of this research indicate that every ration of treatments were significantly different (p <0.05) on dry matter digestibility (DMD) and total VFA production, but did not significantly different (p>0.05) on organic matter digestibility (OMD) and concentration of N-Ammonia (N-NH3). Based on the experimental treatment, R4 has the highest average on DMD, concentration of N-Ammonia (NNH3), but the highest average of OMD shown by R2 treatment. R3 treatment shows the highest production of acetic acid (C2) and butyric acid (nC4), but the highest production of propionic acid shown by R2 treatment and the best C2/C3 ratio was shown by RI. It can be concluded that beef cattle rations based on oil palm agroindustry by product resulted the higher DMD and VFA production than control, 49.59 versus 4.68 and 4.70 versus 2.46. However, higher ratio of acetat-propionat (C2/C3) causing not optimal feed efficiency based on dry lot fattening purposes.
