Abstract
The cement industry is responsible for 10% of global CO2 emissions (entire commercial aviation industry emits only 3%). Cement (key concrete ingredient) is the second most consumed commodity in the world after water. Concrete is used globally for constructing buildings, bridges and highways. However, there are severe environmental implications regarding its use. It’s however possible to reduce CO2 emissions by using cement replacements. Pulverised Fly Ash (PFA) & Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) are established cement replacements- waste from the coal & steel industry. However, they cannot be relied upon in the long term especially due to the current scenario of these industries. Most countries worldwide follow the UK Design Manual and Specification for Road Building which specifies the concrete mixes used for building highways & roads. Currently the manual only specifies PFA & GGBS as possible cement replacements. The project will investigate the use of rice husk ash (RHA) as an alternative partial cement replacement in concrete as a highway material. The RHA will be locally sourced from farms as Indonesia is the 3rd largest rice producer in the world. Initial findings published by the UK principal investigator has identified RHA as a promising cement replacement in high performance concrete, however, this requires further investigation. The overall aim of the research is the development of RHA concrete for compliance with the UK Highways Standard specification for use in UK & Indonesia. Currently there are no UK standards specifying the use of RHA concrete as a highway material. This will be of great and immediate benefit to Indonesia both in terms of infrastructure and socio-economics (in particular SME’s in the agriculture sector). It is intended RHA concrete will be rolled over the main Indonesian highway network over 2-15 years. The targeted journal will be the Journal of Construction and Building Materials or European Journal of Engineering Research and Science.
