Abstract

In order to prevent the contamination, natural insecticide extracted from basil leaves is needed because to it contains bioactive compound such as flavonoids, saponin, tannins, essential oil, and etc. The objectives of this research to explore the effectivity of basil leaves as natural insecticides. The study was carried out with randomized group design with 3 kind of treatments (control, macerated, and sprayed), with 3 times replication. The study used analysis of variance and continued with Tukey analysis. Sensorial data are analyzed by Kruskal–Wallis analysis. As a result of this research, the yield of the extract is calculated at 32.62% from the evaporation process. The test using fly larvae from basil leaves revealed that 90% of the larvae were moved from their containers and 10% were dead, whereas the test using the soaked treatment revealed that 50% of the larvae were moved from their containers and none of the larvae in the control group were moved from their containers. The test of basil leaf extract on the drying of the salted fish shows that sprayed treatments have the highest efficacy to prevent fly contamination. From the first to the third day, the number of flies perched on the spraying treatment was 12 flies, 13 flies, and 8 flies, while the soaked treatment had 28 flies, 23 flies, and 12 flies, and the control group had 41 flies, 37 flies, and 27 flies. Active flies were perched on salted fish in temperatures ranging from 29 to 36 degrees Celsius and humidity levels ranging from 55 to 69%. The tested parameter shows significantly different results, and the sprayed treatment shows the highest efficacy. Sensory analysis reveals that the appearance and fungus of the salted fish were not significantly influenced, whereas the odor, flavor, texture, and color were. The highest organoleptic value in salted fish was achieved by a sprayed treatment using basil leaf extract. Keywords: Basil extract, drying of salted fish, number of flies, temperature and humidity
