Abstract
Background: Streptococcus mutans is a pioneer bacteria in plaque formation tooth ’s surface. Plaque could be eliminated by brushing teeth using a fluor idecontaining toothpaste. Fluoride on high concentration could cause dental fluorosis. Mango leaves (Mangifera indica L.) is one properties. This research aims to determined understand the efficacy of addition of mango leaves extract in toothpaste on S. mutans ’s growth. Method: An experimental study, in vitro, has been done in Balai Besar Laboratorium Kesehatan Palembang in June, 5 to 6, 2017 using 3 treatment groups and 2 control groups. Treatment groups were added mango extract with concentration of 150mg/ml, 200mg/ml, and 250mg/ml while fluoride-containing toothpaste used as positive control group and placebo toothpaste as negative control group. Toothpaste’s antibacterial properties were tested using Kirbi-Bauer method The inhibition zone was measured and analized with lndependent T Test using SPSS 20. Result: Inhibition zone that formed at 150mg/ml, 200mg/ml, and 250mg/ml were consecutively 15±lmm, 17,2±0,83mm and 21,6±l,34mm. The inhibition zone among treatment groups had a significant difference (p<0,05). The 250mg/ml group has the biggest inhibition zone. There was no significant difference between 250mg/ml group and positive control group (p>0,05). Conclution: Addition of mango leaves extract (Mangifera indica L) in toothpaste is ejfective to inhibit Streptococcus mutans ’s growth
