Abstract
Restructuring educational system has become one of the nation agendas for most developing countries in Asia-Pacific, including Indonesia. In reforming Indonesian educational quality, the development of National Education Standards (NES) and Curriculum include assessment as one of the aspects. Recently, assessment standard has been formulated in accordance with 2013 Curriculum. Unfortunately, the implementation has not been satisfying enough. This study was aimed at describing teachers’ knowledge about assessment, investigating the implementation of assessment and identifying factors which affected the implementation of assessment by teachers of English. Using case study design, three teachers of English from one senior high school in Lampung province were chosen to be the participants. To collect the data, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation were used. The results show that (1) teachers’ knowledge about assessment was moderate, (2) each teacher has different experiences and difficulties in implementing assessment principles, utilizing assessment instrument, assessing students’ competences, conducting follow-up activities, and applying 2013 Curriculum-based assessment standard procedures, and (3) factors affected teachers’ assessment practices were related to content knowledge, integrity level, and time management. Hence, to enhance the implementation of assessment by teachers of English, some recommendations have been proposed by the writers.
