Abstract

SKIN THAT IS EXPOSED TO EXCESSIVE SUN EXPOSURE CAN RESULT IN SEVERAL LOSSES THAT CAN DAMAGE THE SKIN INCLUDING PREMATURE AGING, SKIN DAMAGE BY ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION, AND SUNBURN OR BURNING REACTIONS. SUNSCREEN IS NEEDED TO PROTECT THE SKIN FROM DAMAGE CAUSED BY UV RAYS. ZINC OXIDE IS A PHYSICAL SUNSCREEN AGENT THAT IS OFTEN USED AS AN ACTIVE INGREDIENT IN SUNSCREEN PREPARATIONS. AVOCADO LEAVES HAVE THE POTENTIAL AS A SOURCE OF ANTIOXIDANTS WHICH CONTAIN BIOACTIVE COMPONENTS, NAMELY PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS. ONE OF THE IMPORTANT COMPONENTS OF A SUNSCREEN SPRAY GEL IS A GELLING AGENT. THE COMBINATION OF HPMC AND KARBOPOL 940 WAS CARRIED OUT TO OBTAIN BETTER PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SUNSCREEN SPRAY GEL. THIS STUDY AIMS TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF THE COMBINATION OF HPMC AND KARBOPOL 940 ON THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND SPF VALUE OF THE OPTIMUM FORMULA FOR SUNSCREEN SPRAY GEL PREPARATION. AVOCADO LEAF EXTRACTION WAS CARRIED OUT BY MACERATION METHOD USING 96% SOLVENT. AVOCADO LEAF EXTRACT WAS SUBJECTED TO A TOTAL PHENOLIC TEST TO PRODUCE A TOTAL PHENOLIC OF 106 MG GAE/G. THE OPTIMIZATION OF HPMC AND KARBOPOL 940 WAS CARRIED OUT USING THE FACTORIAL DESIGN METHOD WHICH OBTAINED 4 RUNS WITH 3 REPLICATIONS RESULTING IN 12 RUNS WITH DX12 SOFTWARE. THE OBSERVED RESPONSES WERE VISCOSITY, DRYNESS, ADHESION AND SPF VALUE. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT INCREASING THE CONCENTRATION OF HPMC AND KARBOPOL 940 SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED THE INCREASE IN VISCOSITY, DRYING POWER, ADHESION AND SPF VALUE. BASED ON THE RESULTS OBTAINED. OPTIMAL FORMULA FOR SUNSCREEN SPRAY GEL AT HPMC CONCENTRATION OF 0.300% AND KARBOPOL 940 0.152% WITH A VISCOSITY VALUE OF 395.3333 CPS, DRYING POWER OF 352.3333 SECONDS, ADHESION POWER OF 67.6667 SECONDS AND SPF VALUE OF 14.395 WITH MODERATE PROTECTION
