Abstract

This research aims to describe and analyze the strategies employed by rice farmer families to meet their needs amid the increase in fertilizer and pesticide prices in Sidomakmur Village, Ogan Komering Ulu Timur District. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a case study research strategy. This study uses the Survival Strategy (Coping Strategies) approach by Edi Suharto. The data in this study were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews with 8 informants, documentation, and a literature review. The results of the study show that the socio-economic life of rice farmer families affected by the increase in fertilizer prices is insufficient to meet their needs. To maintain and meet the needs of rice farmer families, various strategies are applied, namely, active strategies including (1) doing additional work, and (2) family members participating in work. The passive strategies include (1) saving expenses, (2) saving money and participating in the BPJS program, (3) reducing the quantity of fertilizer, and (4) cultivating fields with their labor. Next, the network strategies include (1) a relatives and neighbors/friends network, (2) a Farmer Group network.
