Abstract
Social interaction is a communication process carried out by individuals between individuals, individuals between groups, and groups between groups. In everyday life, individuals will not be separated from social interaction. Children with special needs, such as mental retardation, experience limited ability to interact socially. One way that can be done to improve social interaction is to provide socialization group activity therapy. Socialization group activity therapy is a therapy used to improve social interaction skills. This research was conducted to determine the effect of socialization group activity therapy on the social interaction abilities of mentally retarded children. This type of research is quantitative, with a pre-experimental, one-group pre-post test design using an observation sheet measuring instrument. The sample for this study was 13 respondents at SDLB C Karya Ibu Palembang with a total sampling technique. The statistical analysis of this study uses marginal homogeneity with a value of = 0.05. The result of p = 0.004 (p value ) means that there is an effect of socialization group activity therapy on the ability of social interaction in children with mental retardation. The results of this study indicate that socialization through group activity therapy can improve social interaction skills. Giving socialization group activity therapy is expected to be an alternative way that can be used to improve social interaction skills in children mentally retardation by applying it to school activities.
