Abstract

Oil palm plantation in Indonesia has significantly increased from 106,000 ha in 1960 to 10,850,000 ha in 2014, some of which were carried out on peat lands. In spite of debate and uncertainty, palm plantation on peat land is often cited as one of major threats to climate change. The objective of current study was to estimate direct emission of N2O from nitrogen fertilizer application to peatland under oil palm Plantation in South Sumatra. The estimation was carried using a methodological tool from UNFCC (2007). The study site was located in Kedaton Village, Kayu Agung Sub-district, Ogan Komering Ilir District, South Sumatra Province. Three plots of oil palm plantation, TBM 1 (0-12 months old), TMB 2 (13-24 months old), and TM (>36 months old), were selected for this study with total area of about 4,474 ha. The results showed that total direct emission of N2O was 4,233.71 kg N2O yr-1, which was equivalent to 5,773.24 kg urea yr-1. The highest N2O emission (1,914.57 kg N2O yr-1) occured at the TBM 2 plot, while the lowest emissions (940.354,00 kg N2O y-1) was at the TM plot. If it is assumed that the market price of urea is Rp. 6.000,00 per kilogram, the total potential economic loss would be about Rp 34,639,446.00 yr-1 or Rp. 7,742,388.00 yr-1 ha-1.
