Abstract

Peronema canescens has traditionally been used by the community of Musi Banyuasin, South Sumatera, Indonesia, to treat hypertension. One of the triggers for hypertension is high levels of blood cholesterol. The in vivo research on the antihyperlipidemia activity of the ethanol extract P. canescens leaves in albino rats Rattus noverticus (Wistar strain) with propylthiouracil-induced hyperlipidemia was done. The animal test was separated into six groups: normal group, negative group, positive group (simvastatin), and three treatment groups with extract doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW. The hyperlipidemia parameter was determined using the photometric enzymatic method. The ethanol extract of P. canescens leaves provided the highest anti-hyperlipidemia activity at 400 mg/kgBW with decreased total cholesterol percentage of 64.82%, LDL of 44.31%, triglyceride 69.00% and increased HDL of 76.89%. P. canescens extract can lower hyperlipidemia with the effective dose (ED50) at 162.12 mg/kgBW. Our results indicated that P. canescens could be used in hyperlipidemia treatment, but further in vivo testing is required.
