Abstract

This research was entitled "The Meaning of Vaporizer (Electric Cigarette) as the Existence of Social Students at Sriwijaya University". The problem in this research is what is the motive of students to use e-cigarettes and how the process of student awareness in using e-cigarettes and the meaning of e-cigarettes as a social existence of students at Sriwijaya University. This research was to find out the motives, the process of awareness and the meaning of the vaporizer (Electric Cigarette) as the social existence of students at Sriwijaya University. To analyze these problems, the phenomenology theory of Alfred Schutz was used. The method used in this study is qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. The location of this research was carried out on the Sriwijaya University campus in the Indralaya campus and around the campus. The research informants were selected purposively by taking 11 informants consisting of 9 main informants namely active students at the Sriwijaya University campus in Indralaya. And 2 supporting informants were: an electric cigarette shop owner and a close friend from the main informant. The results of this study indicate that the motives of students using e-cigarettes consist of two motives. First, the motives for (Because Motives) are: curiosity, influence of friends, taste that is good and varied, environmentally friendly, fragrant aroma. Second, the motive of the goal (In Order Motives), namely: to reduce addiction to electric cigarettes, to save expenses. The process of awareness of students in using e-cigarettes is through the process of subjective awareness, intersubjective awareness and objective awareness. The meaning of e-cigarettes as a student's social existence is: to be acknowledged by its existence in a friendship environment and as a tool for expressing a modern lifestyle.
