Abstract
The construction of the Kayuagung Toll Road on peatlands is highly risky. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of peat soil improvement methods by comparing the permeability values before and after vacuum consolidation at different depths and distances from various PVD points of the testing samples. The method used is quantitative descriptive with data collection techniques through laboratory modeling. The modeling utilizes a concrete testing tank measuring (6x1x1) m, a vacuum pump pressure of ±70 kPa, and monitoring tools such as a dial gauge, vacuum gauge, and piezometer. The tank is filled with peat soil to a depth of 90 cm, and vacuum consolidation testing is conducted for 147 hours. The highest observed settlement during monitoring is 36.4 mm, and the final reading of pore water pressure is 3.653 kPa. Permeability testing using the falling head method before vacuum consolidation yielded a higher value for kh compared to kv, with a kh/kv ratio of 1.15. The variations in soil sample depth used for testing after vacuum consolidation are 20 cm, 50 cm, and 80 cm from the soil surface, with distances of 5 cm and 10 cm from the PVD. After conducting permeability testing on the samples following vacuum consolidation, it is concluded that the water content decreased, bulk density increased, and the percentage passing through sieve no. 200 at a distance of 5 cm from the PVD increased. In the permeability testing, it is concluded that the deeper the soil and the further the distance from the PVD, the lower the values of kh and kv.
