Abstract

Maternal death is still a concern in many developing countries, including in Indonesia. Utilization of childbirth services in health facilities ensures that mothers give birth safely to reduce the risk of maternal death. Mothers who give a birth in health facilities are better in terms of health workers, equipment and places. The purpose of this study was to analyze the determinants of maternity place selection in Indonesia. This research is a quantitative study with cross sectional study design, using secondary data from Indonesian Family Life Survey in 2014. Research sample were 5623 mothers aged 15-49 years who were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using logistic regression statistical test. The results shows that mothers who gave birth in health facilities amounted to 78.1%. Bivariate analysis results prove that the education variables (p-value <0.001), regional location (p-value <0.001), region (p-value <0.001), status economy (p-value <0.001), insurance ownership (p-value <0.001), employment status (p-value <0.05) and ANC visits (p-value <0.001) have a significant relationship with the utilization of maternity place in Indonesia. Education is the most dominant variable related to the utilization of maternity places in Indonesia (p-value <0.001; PR 5.731; 95% C1: 4.359-7.535) after being controlled by other variables.. Mother's education is very important in the choice of place of childbirth. Mother’s knowledge can be increased by mothers activity such as attending counseling or seminars, consultations during antenatal care, books, internet and television which can increase information and awareness to give birth at health facility.
